Texas High Schoolers Land 17 on Allstate/AFCA's 2018 Good Works Team Nominee List

Two weeks ago, the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced 169 nominees for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Please see the AFCA’s original release here.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field.  AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need.  Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.

Seventy (70) of the 169 student-athletes were chosen as nominees from Football Bowl Subdivision schools while the remaining 99 were from Football Championship Division, NCAA Divisions II and III and NAIA programs.

Walk Sports Services researched the high schools that each of the 169 nominees attended and discovered that this year’s prospective award winners came from 39 states and the District of Columbia.

The state with the most of its high school football players nominated was Texas with 17.

Florida followed with 15 while California, Georgia and Ohio each contributed 11 student-athletes to the list.

The remaining state distribution is as follows:

9 - IL
7 - IA, MN, NC
6 - MI, NJ, PA, WI
5 - IN
3 - AL, CO, NY, TN, VA
2 - MD, MO, MT, NE, SC, SD, UT, WA
1 - DC, DE, HI, ID, KS, MA, MS, NM, ND, OK, OR, WV, WY

Four high schools each produced two nominees.  They included Buford High School in Georgia, Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Illinois and two in Ohio – Akron’s Copley High School and Kenton High School.
